Music Selection for Alan’s Retirement
By A. Łubowicz

The tableau below evaluates music by a Polish composer Fryderyk (Frederic) Chopin. Our candidates include the Etude, Prelude and Polonaise. Our constraints consist of two markedness constraints, Tempo and Novel Harmonic Innovations, and a faithfulness constraint, No Change, which demands that the beginning and end of the composition be similar.

/Fryderyk (Frederic) Chopin/

Novel Harmonic Innovations

No Change (No Dramatic Finale)

a. Etiuda (Etude) Op. 10 No. 12 (so-called Revolutionary)

b. Preludium (Prelude) Op. 28 No.15 in D-flat major

☞ c. Polonez (Polonaise) Op. 53 in A-flat major (so-called Heroic)

Under the ranking of Tempo and Novel Harmonic Innovations above No Change, the “Heroic” Polonaise in A-flat major (my favorite) is the winner! Happy listening!
